Few communities can boast of Ladysmith's vibrant volunteer spirit and the generosity of its citizens and businesses. It is due to that generosity that the town's goal of having its own trolley transit system is a close reality. The original targets have been reached and exceeded, but a two-part recommendation has been made by the trolley committee to investigate the purchase of battery powered electric trolleys, which will increase the initial capital outlay, but substantially reduce operating and maintenance costs.
At
the same time the feasibility of leasing two diesel trolleys to get
public transit rolling in Ladysmith will be explored. Hence fund raising
will continue. Citizens and businesses may donate directly to the Trolley
Fund at Ladysmith and District Credit Union.
Although
the initial expense of the electric trolley will be higher, the advantages
are many:
· Environmental impact will be zero: No
fumes - no noise.
· Minimal energy costs - a major concern
with soaring fossil fuel prices.
· Maintenance & operating expenses
will be a fraction of a diesel or hybrid system.
· Minimal ecological footprint.
BC Transit and the CVRD have partnered with the Town of Ladysmith to complete a feasibility study, which will support the town with vehicle selection, route design and other logistical issues. The proposed plan is to have a total of 35 stops, with an approximate travelling time of two minutes between stops. Another goal is to have all stops within a five to seven minute walk of all residences. It is intended that ten of the stops will include a bench and another five stops will have benches and shelters. All stops will be curbed and paved.
