Ladysmith Trolley

All Aboard –
The Ladysmith Trolley is Here!

A year ago it was a dream. At 8:01 a.m. on Tuesday August 4, that dream came true as Ladysmith's very own transit service kicked into gear and the 'temporary trolley' left the first stop of its 40 km circuit from one end of Ladysmith to the other.

The Ladysmith Trolley Service meets several key goals for the Town. It supports sustainability by reducing greenhouse gases, provides increased mobility for young and old, residents and visitors alike, reduces parking congestion at the town's two major shopping areas, and strengthens the local economy by enabling more people to access local businesses.

The Trolley Service runs from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The circuit is composed of seven routes and will take one hour and forty minutes to complete. The circuit is repeated five times each day. The routes have been carefully mapped out to offer transportation from the north end of Ladysmith to the south end, offering residents a regular route that will take them to appointments, shops and businesses virtually anywhere within Ladysmith's boundaries.

The full trolley schedule and route maps are available at businesses throughout Ladysmith, the Visitor InfoCentre, City Hall, the Frank Jameson Community Centre, and on this website. People can also call 250.245.6400 for information. Trolley times are posted at each stop. The Trolley will stop at most stops five times a day. However, major stops like the 49th Parallel will have the Trolley stop by 20 times in the 10-hour period.

The Ladysmith Trolley is equipped with a wheelchair lift and bike rack. There will be no cost to ride the trolley, which will be funded mainly through advertising. The Town plans to erect bus shelters at key locations along the route in the fall.

"The community has been behind the trolley since day one and we are excited and proud to have the service up and running," said Mayor Rob Hutchins. "We have raised $200,000 from the community, through donations by major sponsors and by people who emptied their piggy banks to support a green initiative that benefits residents, businesses and visitors."

Trolley sponsors include the Ladysmith and District Credit Union, Island Homes Realty, Ladysmith Rotary Club, the Ladysmith Health Care Auxiliary, Dr. Tom and Wilma Wickham and Brian Marshall.

Mayor Hutchins welcomes feedback on the new service.

"The stops and routes are not set in stone," he said. "We have developed a very good introductory route and schedule with input from residents and businesses. However, we expect that we will need to modify them over time. Trolley ridership and citizens' recommendations will help determine future changes and improvements."
